NORTHBROOK ADDITION AND RENOVATION

This project is an 800 square foot addition to an existing 3300 square foot single-family mid-century modern home.  The existing house is a solar-oriented south facing house with a flat roof.  The original carport was rendered as a hovering plane on a timber frame structure that compressed the outdoor space to a human scale as one entered the house.  The existing floors are stone, set atop a slab-on-grade, meant to provide thermal mass to capture the sun’s heat in winter months.

The scope included conversion of an existing carport to a two-stall garage for modern functionality, as well as an enclosed corridor to link the new garage to the kitchen.  Additionally, an existing storage room was converted into a guest suite with an ensuite bathroom, and the existing kitchen was fully renovated.  New lighting was installed throughout all areas in the project scope.  The drawings were completed on a tight timeline to meet the owner’s move-in requirements.  The project was highly value-engineered to meet a tight budget, and much of the architectural scope encompassed construction documents, and zoning and building permits.

Out of respect for the original design, the stone floors were retained in the renovated areas.  A single bay of the existing flat hovering carport roof was kept, reducing the scale of the new garage facing the driveway and street.  New millwork was made in a medium-dark walnut to complement the existing cypress wood paneling throughout the house.   Large windows were strategically placed in the corridor link for added daylight to the new bedroom, and the new siding was custom made in clear cedar to match the original.
